According to the report, Daily Mail On 10 April 2025, a 36-year-old British mother was Condemned to life imprisonment to try to travel to Afghanistan with her four children. Her intention was to offer them as martyrs to the Islamic State, in a plan that the courts have described as “simply evil.”.
The court has determined that Jami had radicalised her children and intended to join the Afghan branch of the Islamic State (ISK), where she wanted to take part in suicide attacks alongside them. Judge Cheema-Grubb stated that her actions were “simply evil” and that her willingness to offer her children as martyrs was “almost inconceivable”. “There is no sign that she is undergoing de-radicalisation,” the judge said. So much so that Jami claimed the right to appear in a burka on her police record, after an image of her with her hair uncovered was published.
From school canteen supervisor to jihadist activist
Farishta Jami, born in Afghanistan, arrived in the United Kingdom in 2008 and appeared to be fully integrated. For years she worked as a supervisor in a school canteen and regularly attended Qur'an study classes. In the eyes of her neighbours, she was a kind and unassuming mother who even shared food with those living nearby. But behind this façade lurked a jihadist activist. Jami managed Islamic State propaganda channels on Telegram., where he broadcast videos of violence and instructions for carrying out attacks.
The most serious thing, however, was that he wanted to involve his children. He intended to take them to Afghanistan and turn them into martyrs in suicide attacks. The prosecution and the verdict made it clear. One of her sons, in fact, shared violent videos with his schoolmates. This incident set in motion an investigation that would ultimately reveal Jami's double life and bring her to justice.
A mother who indoctrinated her children
The British authorities activated child protection protocols for the minors, who have been separated from their mother. Social services and the Prevent programme have begun the children's de-radicalisation. During the trial, it was confirmed that Jami had sent videos of Hamas's attack on Israel to one of her children, who then shared them with other pupils via Teams.
Jami tried to justify her activities by saying she only wanted to “debate and challenge extremist opinions”, but the evidence exposed her.
The Doubt of Integration
This case has reopened the debate on Islamist radicalism in the United Kingdom, especially among people who appear to be integrated. The head of the West Midlands Counter-Terrorism Police, Alison Hurst, described the case as “truly horrifying”, particularly because the children were victims of active indoctrination.“She was a mother who helped her children become terrorists.”, said prosecutor Michelle Heeley KC.
Now, Jami will spend at least 17 years in prison before she can apply for parole. Meanwhile, her children are trying to rebuild their lives away from the shadow of a mother who chose fanaticism over motherhood.
