In Virginia (United States), Muslim pupils have been expelled from two state schools for filming videos in which they simulated Hamas-inspired kidnappings.. In the recordings, made inside the centre, It can be seen how several students are laughing as they surround a classmate, cover his head with a Palestinian scarf (keffiyeh) and force him into a container or the boot of a car.. During the scene, one of the young men asks mockingly, “So, are you going to the MSA meeting now?” The video ends with laughter and shouts, and clearly depicts the kidnappings carried out by Hamas during the 7 October 2023 attack on Israel.

The incidents took place at two locations in Fairfax County, near Washington DC. The videos, similar in format and message, suggest there may be coordination between the student groups. At both centres the Muslim Student Association (MSA) is present., a student organisation founded in the 1960s that promotes Muslim identity among students. According to some researchers, it was influenced by the Muslim Brothers in its origins. Internal district sources admit that an investigation has been opened to determine whether the MSA played any organisational or support role in the creation of the videos.

Journalist Asra Nomani was one of the first to denounce the events on social media. She published the original videos and wrote that it was a “A very tasteless sketch that trivialises Hamas kidnappings.”. His message resonated widely, reaching major media outlets such as the New York Post o Express.co.

CAIR defends the students and says it was a “joke”

The Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR) is the most important American organisation defending the civil and religious rights of Muslims. It typically intervenes in cases of discrimination or media controversy. After the videos were released, CAIR has come to the defence of the students involved and has insisted that it was a “prank” with no political or violent intent..

In a statement, the organisation said that the students were performing a “school sketch” and that the Fairfax district's response — with suspensions and expulsions — is “disproportionate and unfair”. According to CAIR, “the students were neither glorifying Hamas nor did they want to offend anyone”, and the whole thing is a misinterpretation of an internal humour video.

The CAIR spokesperson has also insinuated that the students They have been treated more severely for being Muslim or Arab.. This accusation has generated debate, although within the Virginia Muslim community itself there are voices that disagree. Some parents and teachers have pointed out that “Making jokes about kidnappings or terrorism is irresponsible.”and that this episode damages the image of Muslim students who work for coexistence in schools.

Videos removed and concern over desensitisation

After the controversy, The original videos have been removed from social media.. The copies that were circulating on TikTok, X (Twitter) and Instagram are no longer accessible, although some local media outlets have preserved fragments to document the events.

Fairfax County Public Schools (FCPS), which is responsible for the two centres, has issued a statement saying that “Simulating kidnappings or acts of violence is unacceptable in any context.”District officials insist that the videos do not reflect the values of public schools and that action has been taken to protect the safety and well-being of all students. The case, they say, should serve as a reminder that the boundaries between humour and violence must not be crossed, not even in play.
