L’imam de Niça diu que la ciutat és «odiosa i racista»

L’alcalde demana explicacions de les declaracions de l’imam a la televisió d’Algèria.

En una entrevista emesa el 12 de març a una cadena pública algeriana, l’imam Mahmoud Benzamia, líder de la mesquita En-Nour de Niça, va descriure la ciutat com «plena d’odi i racista». Acompanyat pel cònsol general d’Algèria, va afirmar que promou «el nostre Estat, l’Estat algerià» en aquesta localitat. També va expressar satisfacció perquè la mesquita En-Nour sigui considerada «un centre islàmic algerià». ​

Mitjans com fdesouche.com se n’han fet ressó i polítics i ciutadans les han interpretat com una mena de fidelitat prioritària a un estat estranger. L’alcalde de Niça, ha anunciat que traslladarà el cas al ministre de l’Interior i que presentarà una denúncia formal. Considera les paraules de l’imam greus i perjudicials per a la convivència a la ciutat.

Diu que se l’ha malinterpretat

Després de tres dies de silenci i enmig de l’agitació dins de la seva pròpia mesquita, Mahmoud Benzamia va publicar un comunicat el dissabte 29 de març. En aquest text defensiu, l’imam assegura que “les paraules que se m’atribueixen han estat tretes de context i interpretades erròniament”. No obstant això, no nega haver-les pronunciat. Aquesta resposta ha estat considerada insuficient per alguns sectors polítics i socials que exigeixen una revisió a fons del finançament i la supervisió de les mesquites amb vincles internacionals.

Les declaracions van trigar menys a provocar reaccions dins de la mateixa comunitat musulmana local. Adil Echaoui, president de l’associació que gestiona l’institut En-Nour, es va desmarcar al moment de les paraules de l’imam. “Ens desolidaritzem totalment”, va afirmar, rebutjant que la comunitat de fidels es vegi associada a un missatge tan divisori.

Un líder religiós migrant amb trajectòria i influència

Mahmoud Benzamia, de 52 anys, va néixer a Algèria i va arribar a França amb 22 per estudiar a Marsella. Fa més de trenta anys que exerceix com a imam i ha esdevingut una figura clau dins del panorama religiós niçard. A més de dirigir l’Institut Niçois En-Nour, és vicepresident del Comitè d’Imams dels Alps Marítims, una posició que li dóna una gran influència entre els responsables religiosos de la regió.

Segons descriu Nice-Matin, el seu despatx reflecteix plenament la importància de la religió a la seva vida: una biblioteca amb centenars de llibres majoritàriament en àrab i un gran quadre de fidels pregant davant de la Meca dominen l’espai. Ell mateix es presenta com una persona oberta, segura i orgullosa del seu paper dins la comunitat musulmana.
