A 27-year-old Afghan woman was murdered last September at her home in Eskilstuna, Sweden, allegedly by her husband and several relatives. The Swedish prosecutor's office has classified it as an honour crime. As was reported Remix News (7 May 2025), The victim was trying to get a divorce after years of pressure and family control.

According to various Swedish media outlets such as Aftonbladet, she was of Afghan origin and had arrived in Sweden as a refugee. She wanted to free herself from an arranged marriage and a family environment that practised oppressive, honour-based control. Prosecutor Lindblom has stated that the motive for the crime was “to restore the family's honour”, a justification often used in this type of crime.

The woman was found dead on 17 September 2024 in her flat in the Nyfors district, after she failed to turn up for work. The authorities believe she was murdered two days earlier, on 15 September. The husband, who was living abroad, travelled expressly to Sweden that weekend and, with the help of relatives, monitored his wife's movements..

Mother's help to kill

According to the prosecution, The husband allegedly drowned or suffocated the woman, with the active assistance of his mother.. She had also allegedly tried to hire someone to carry out the murder before becoming directly involved. The prosecutors They have provided a recording in which the mother-in-law speaks with a third party to plan the crime..

The husband, his mother and his brother have been charged with murder. The mother also faces charges of conspiracy to commit murder. The brother is alleged to have helped keep watch over the victim and dispose of evidence. The husband's sister and her husband have been charged as accomplices to the crime. Two other women are accused of helping the husband flee the country and of tampering with evidence.

The case has generated a wave of indignation in Sweden and has reopened the debate on the protection of Migrant women trapped in patriarchal and violent family environments. Despite the evidence presented — including digital surveillance, intercepted communications and witness testimony — all the accused deny the allegations.
