The CBS News ,and other media outlets across the country reported that on Wednesday 3 September the city's police force shared an image of a new police shield on Facebook. The surprise was that It featured the words “Dearborn Heights Police” in English and Arabic.. In the same publication, the department mentioned the agent who had designed it and He noted that this is another way in which [the Dearborn Heights Police Department] continue to celebrate the cultural richness that makes our city unique.”.
The post quickly went viral and critical comments began to appear. The department's reaction was to close the comments, and on Saturday they deleted the post..
Clarification from the Dearborn Heights authorities
On Friday, the mayor of Dearborn Heights, Bill Bazzi, clarified that The design of the new police badge was only intended for “internal discussions”.” and that it should not have been presented as official. The Police Officers’ Association described it as “reckless” that the chief of police, Ahmed Haidar, had made the image public. According to the association, The initial idea was to create a commemorative shield for the month of Ramadan., but Haidar ended up offering it for permanent year-round use. This decision, according to the statement, made many officers feel segregated within the force and was adopted despite warnings of “possible negative repercussions.”.
The association also stated that Haidar's actions had “unnecessarily endangered the lives of our agents”, as the department had received numerous threats and criticisms, without detailing their content.
