The arrival in Manzanares (Ciudad Real) of a group of more than a hundred sub-Saharan immigrants from the Hotel Amaraigua in Malgrat de Mar has caused such unrest that it has finally been cancelled. The reason for the transfer was that on 16 April the hotel in the Maresme needed to be free to start the summer tourist season.
The controversy began when it emerged that the NGO managing the immigrants would be moving them to the Hotel Manzanares in the town. The establishment was inundated with complaints on social media and a demonstration was called.
The hotel owner defends himself.
The manager of the Hotel Manzanares He made a statement on Facebook. to make it clear that these are not Unaccompanied Foreign Minors (UMFs), but men aged between 20 and 40 who “have fled their countries of origin, where there is war, famine and misery”. It also stresses that “they are not violent, confrontational or delinquent people” and that “at no point will they be alone”, since “at the hotel where they will stay overnight there will be staff from the hosting NGO present at all times”.
Furthermore, it is expected that the arrival of this group of migrants will have a positive impact on the municipality's economy, as the creation of between 12 and 15 jobs is anticipated.
Finally, the NGO Movimiento por la Paz said that the hotel they had booked did not meet the necessary requirements.
The council knew nothing about it.
The controversy was closed on Monday after the mayor, Julián Nieva, confirmed at the municipal council meeting that no group of immigrants would be arriving in the municipality. He even explained that no one had informed him of anything and that he knew the same as the residents. After the council meeting, the demonstration was called off.
Manzanares is a municipality in the province of Ciudad Real, in the autonomous community of Castilla–La Mancha. It has around 18,000 inhabitants and is situated in a strategic thoroughfare on the La Mancha plain between Madrid and Andalusia, which has made it an important centre for communications and economic activity.
