Three young people aged between 19 and 24 have been arrested this week in northern France, suspected of preparing suicide attacks in the name of the Islamic State. According to what has been revealed The Figaro And, as confirmed by the National Anti-Terrorist Prosecutor's Office (PNAT), the arrestees—originating from Lille and Dunkirk—were planning to immolate themselves in public spaces with the aim of causing a massacre.
The police were tracking them and, during the searches, They found a vest modified to carry explosives, a detonator device and a list of the ingredients for making TATP, a highly dangerous homemade explosive commonly used in jihadist attacks. One of the detainees had openly shown his support for the perpetrators of terrorist attacks on social media.
Two jailed, one under judicial supervision
Two of the young men have been jailed and charged with criminal terrorist conspiracy. The third has been prosecuted for failing to report the incidents and has been placed under judicial supervision. The ongoing judicial investigation will have to clarify the extent to which the plan was prepared and whether they had accomplices.
This case once again highlights the persistence of jihadist radicalisation within French territory, especially among young people, and the complexity of detecting and countering these threats in time.
