On Friday 30 October, a 30-year-old man who had destroyed the Church of San Rocco in Formia on 23 September boarded a plane bound for Morocco. That day, the Moroccan entered the 17th-century church, he grabbed a chair, struck the altar and knocked over several statues of saints while shouting in Arabic. Subsequently, the police found evidence of islamist radicalisation on his mobile phone and computer, which prompted them to the expulsion from Italy just 37 days after the events.
According to the Italian newspaper The Chronicle, the man too caused damage to an image of the Virgin Mary situated on a small altar on Via del Castello. When the police arrived, he resisted arrest and injured three officers, who required hospital assistance.
The man was legally residing in Formia and was arrested for damage and resisting authority. The police investigation continued and the officers examined his mobile phone and computer. They found phrases and comments in Arabic that exalted islamic jihad. In light of signs of radicalisation, the Italian authorities decided to expel him. The Interior Minister, Matteo Piantedosi, publicly announced the repatriation.
