Proveïdors de la construcció boicotegen la mesquita del Lake District (Regne Unit)

Diverses empreses locals del sector de la construcció es retiren del projecte religiós per l’oposició social.

El Lake District, una regió muntanyosa i plena de llacs situada al comtat de Cumbria, al nord-oest d’Anglaterra, és coneguda per la seva bellesa paisatgística i per ser Patrimoni de la Humanitat. La construcció de la seva primera mesquita al poble de Keswick ha generat una forta oposició entre els residents locals. Diverses empreses de construcció i proveïdors de materials han decidit desvincular-se del projecte, al·legant pressions socials i desacord amb la iniciativa. ​

Segons informa The Express, la nova mesquita es construirà a la localitat de Keswick, un poble turístic dins del Lake District. L’edifici tindrà una capacitat per a 200 persones i servirà com a centre de culte i reunió per als musulmans de la zona i pels visitants de fe islàmica que viatgen sovint al Parc Nacional

Boicot empresarial en resposta a la pressió social

Segons va informar The Express el 14 d’abril, empreses de construcció i proveïdors de materials han decidit desvincular-se del projecte, al·legant pressions socials i desacord amb el projecte. Els proveïdors locals afirmen que el projecte ha generat una percepció pública desfavorable, cosa que ha influït en la seva decisió de no aportar material de construcció pel centre islàmic. També temen que la presència d’un edifici religiós de gran visibilitat alteri la percepció tradicional de la zona i provoqui un efecte crida que transformi l’ambient rural del municipi.

El responsable del projecte, Faraaz Ashraf, va declarar al mateix mitjà que la retirada dels contractistes ha estat “decebedora” i atribuïble al clima hostil generat per campanyes locals. També va expressar preocupació per l’augment de discursos d’odi a través de xarxes socials.

Tot i que les obres ja han començat, el projecte ha patit retards perquè no els serveixen ni formigó ni pedres per a la construcció. Segons un portaveu del centre, aquesta negativa ha estat provocada per la cobertura negativa del canal de televisió GB News, que ha generat un clima d’hostilitat envers el projecte. Tot i que la situació s’ha resolt parcialment amb la cerca de nous proveïdors de fora de la zona, l’incident ha causat retards i incertesa en un moment clau de la construcció.

Una obra petita amb resistència gran

Encara que la mesquita no serà un edifici de grans dimensions, la seva presència té una càrrega simbòlica important. El Lake District és una regió d’origen majoritàriament cristià, amb molt poca presència de població musulmana, i alguns veïns s’han mostrat contraris a aquest tipus de construcció en una àrea considerada patrimoni cultural i natural.

El boicot empresarial és, doncs, un senyal del rebuig organitzat que ha anat prenent forma a mesura que avançava el projecte. Tot i que la mesquita serà relativament petita, la seva construcció ha encès un debat intens sobre com ha de ser el futur d’un espai natural icònic i qui hi té cabuda. Per a molts opositors, el projecte no només modifica el paisatge físic, sinó que també posa en joc els valors i la manera de viure d’un territori profundament arrelat en la seva tradició.​
