Les dades d’una enquesta recent de l’Institute for the Impact of Faith in Life (IIFL) publicada per RMX News és contundent: el 71% dels musulmans britànics s’identifica primer com a musulmà abans que com a britànic, anglès o escocès. Només un 27% es defineix en primer lloc per la seva nacionalitat.

L’estudi basat en entrevistes a 815 musulmans residents al Regne també diu que la tendència és encara més marcada entre els joves de menys de 30 anys. En aquesta franja d’edat, un 85% es considera musulmà abans que britànic. En canvi, entre la població musulmana més gran, la majoria (57%) es defineix com a britànica. Segons els investigadors, les generacions anteriors van sentir la necessitat d’amagar la seva identitat musulmana per integrar-se, mentre que els joves actuals se senten lliures per prioritzar-la.

El motiu no és religiós, sinó social

Segons l’IIFL, la raó principal d’aquesta identificació no és la fidelitat a l’islam, sinó el sentiment de no ser benvinguts com a britànics. Això porta moltes persones a refugiar-se en la identitat religiosa, que perceben com a més autèntica o acceptada dins del seu entorn.

Tot i aquest distanciament identitari, la majoria dels musulmans britànics prefereixen viure al Regne Unit abans que en un país de majoria musulmana. El 78% considera que el Regne Unit és més acollidor per als musulmans que altres països europeus com França, Alemanya o els Països Baixos.

Molts argumenten que la diversitat cultural i religiosa del Regne Unit els permet practicar la fe sense cridar l’atenció, cosa que no sempre passa en països islàmics, on poden sentir-se més observats o jutjats dins la pròpia comunitat.

Una identitat complexa i en tensió

Aquestes dades posen de manifest una tensió creixent entre identitat religiosa, nacionalitat i integració. Mentre molts musulmans britànics rebutgen una identificació nacional, alhora defensen el Regne Unit com un bon lloc per viure i practicar la seva fe.
