On 2 April 2024, Samara, a 13-year-old girl, was brutally assaulted by a group of youths in front of Collège Arthur-Rimbaud in Montpellier. According to reports The Dispatch, Around 20 to 25 boys were waiting for her at the school gates; they attacked her, threw her to the ground and beat her violently. Samara managed to escape, but she lost consciousness shortly afterwards and was taken in critical condition to Montpellier University Hospital, where she was placed in an induced coma.

In the days beforehand, one of the attackers created a social media account with a photo of Samara and an explicit call to rape her. The attack appears to have been premeditated and is therefore considered a possible “punitive expedition.”.

Harassed for dressing like a European

Samara's mother reported that her daughter She was the victim of constant mockery from other pupils because of the way she dressed «European-style», for wearing make-up and for not wearing the veil.. When questioned by various media outlets, the mother of the assaulted schoolgirl explained that one of her classmates
«She had been making her miserable for a year and a half or two years.»
.Explain also that his daughter had been already assaulted the previous week, but I hadn't told him.

The companion (veiled) and hers Her classmates insulted her, spat at her and called her a «kafir» (unbeliever). and fucking every day. The mother claimed that she had asked the school to protect her daughter, but her requests were not heeded.

Her mother has expressed her perplexity at the aggression: “I'm from the same community as these girls; I'm also Muslim. I don't understand this version of the religion they practise.”. And she adds: “Even though I'm in control, I let my daughter express herself. She's growing up. She makes her own choices. It's sad that a little girl has to fit into a mould imposed by others.”

This case has shaken the educational community and has brought to light a reality that many prefer not to see: the imposition of religious and patriarchal rigour among adolescents within Muslim communities. This climate generates Bullying and violence against those girls who don't conform to the mould and do things like talking to boys, dressing as they please or wearing make-up.
