The Catalan independence movement faces a new obstacle: the immigrant population. This segment of the population shows significantly lower support for independence.
The barometers of the Centre for Opinion Studies (CEO) reveal that only 27% of immigrants with voting rights would opt for an independent Catalonia. Furthermore, 75% of these voters opt for constitutionalist or non-independence parties, such as the PSC (48%), the PP (13%), Vox (8%) and the Comuns (6%). Only 16 per cent of immigrants vote for secessionist parties, with 81 per cent for Junts and 61 per cent for Esquerra.
Concern over the decline in the use of Catalan
The Government attributes the decline in the social use of Catalan to the increase in the immigrant population. The Secretary of Language Policy, Francesc Xavier Vila, has pointed out that only one third of Catalans use Catalan as their everyday language, a figure influenced by «very significant population movements.».
These data highlight a growing challenge for the independence movement, which sees how the immigrant demographic could influence Catalonia's political and cultural future.
