The burqa and the niqab have been officially banned in public offices in Lombardy since yesterday. The Lega Nord proposal included banning the veil in schools, but this point did not succeed.
The approved regulations stipulate that anyone wishing to access public buildings must have their face uncovered in order to be identified. This includes hospitals, government offices and other public facilities where essential services are provided to the public.
The MP Alessandro Corbetta of the majority party Lega Nord has justified the measure, stating that «We cannot tolerate that these practices, which constitute a violation of women's fundamental rights, have any place in Italy and Europe, where we have fought hard for women's emancipation.. Everyone must be recognisable in public spaces, especially in sensitive locations such as hospitals or official buildings..» .
It is only the first step in a larger struggle.
For Corbetta, Wearing the veil does not represent integration., but it is necessary that everyone can freely express their own identity, also choosing «how to dress», and not through 'reactionary impositions» that are alien to our culture.
The motion has been approved with the support of the conservative groups, while the opposition has expressed its disagreement, considering that the measure infringes on individual and religious freedom.
