Lleida, Premià, Cubelles, Altafulla and other cities include the hijab on the 8M poster.
Municipal councils governed by the PSC, Junts, ERC and others have no problem including a religious symbol of oppression of women.

In recent years, it has become increasingly common to see official posters for International Women's Day on 8 March depicting the diversity of women, including figures wearing the hijab. This year, 2025, municipalities such as Lleida, Premià de Mar, Cubelles and Altafulla have followed this trend.
Banality of a symbol linked to submission
This normalisation of the veil in International Women's Day campaigns clashes with the reality for many women around the world who are fighting to free themselves from this imposition and are persecuted for not wearing it.
In this sense, the fact that Catalan local councils include the hijab in their institutional campaigns contrasts with the values of freedom and equality championed on 8M.

The Ripoll Censorship
Sílvia Orriols, the mayor of Ripoll, sparked controversy in 2024 by rejecting the winning poster for the Sant Eudald Festival. The reason was that it featured a girl wearing an Islamic veil.

Banner censored by Sílvia Orriols for including the Islamic veil on a little girl's head.
The Junts municipal group described Orriols« decision as a »barbarity«, the CUP called it »a disgrace that denies the popular will« and the author of the poster said »it's racism".
