Un nou informe publicat pel Pew Research Center el març de 2025 revela una tendència poc coneguda: l’islam està guanyant fidels a Amèrica, especialment entre persones criades dins del cristianisme. En un context mundial marcat pel creixement de l’ateisme i la desafecció religiosa, l’islam sorprèn per la seva capacitat de retenir els seus membres i atreure nous conversos.

Una enquesta del 2020 indicava que el 9% dels conversos a l’islam als EUA eren llatins, un augment notable respecte al 5% registrat el 2017. Aquestes conversions impliquen principalment persones d’origen mexicà o porto-riqueny, però també s’estenen a altres països d’Amèrica Llatina.

Per què es converteixen?

L’informe no entra en les causes exactes, però apunta a factors com la recerca espiritual, les crisis identitàries, o la visibilitat i activisme de les comunitats musulmanes com a possibles explicacions del fenomen.

Una hipòtesi és el context familiar: gairebé un terç de les famílies hispàniques als EUA són monoparentals, sovint liderades per mares solteres, mentre que les famílies musulmanes mostren índexs de divorci més baixos. Aquesta estabilitat familiar pot resultar atractiva.
