Un cop de tornada als Estats Units, Tarek Mehanna no va abandonar el seu compromís amb el jihadisme. Segons els fiscals, es va convertir en un dels principals difusors de propaganda d’Al-Qaeda en anglès, amb l’objectiu de radicalitzar altres joves nord-americans. Va traduir i publicar manuals de formació terrorista, així com sermons d’ideòlegs extremistes com Anwar al-Awlaki. La seva activitat digital no era anecdòtica: buscava inspirar atacs domèstics i reclutar nous combatents per a la causa gihadista. També va justificar públicament l’assassinat de soldats i civils americans, i va considerar que actuar als Estats Units era legítim dins la seva visió de “resistència islàmica”.

El 2012, Tarek Mehanna va ser condemnat a 17 anys de presó federal per donar suport material a Al-Qaeda, conspirar per matar soldats nord-americans i difondre propaganda terrorista.

Un centre religiós sota escrutini

L’escàndol ha provocat indignació política i social. El regidor de Staten Island, Frank Morano, ha demanat una revisió urgent dels processos de selecció de personal: “No podem permetre que persones amb passat extremista tinguin accés a infants en etapes tan vulnerables”, ha dit al New York Post.

El Muslim Community Center de Staten Island, que l’alcalde Eric Adams va reinaugurar a principis de 2025, va contractar Mehanna sense informar públicament del seu passat.
